Career Assessment
|
 |
Not Ready : you’ve reached the “better
the devil you know than the devil you don’t” stage, more or less all aspects
of your job fall into the OK category – and it’s hardly inspiring.
Unsure. The key issue here
is that you don’t do anything about your future until you get to the desperate
stage and you take some inappropriate action without assessing what your
real needs and wants are.
Not ready for the upheaval.
Some people tend to put themselves through abject misery before they’ll
consider a change to their career, they feel its better to accept things
as they are. We must listen to ourselves, if wee feel its time for
a change, then maybe it is.
Potential. Here is where you
can start to realise your true potential – again a part of you may be unsure
of what you want to do, and another part of you wants a change. Listen
to yourself and trust your instinct, if a part of you feels it’s time for
a change, then probably it is.
Potential Risks
-
If you have no solid goals, you cannot assess
the progress you have made.
-
“I’m too busy to look at these things”.
You must take the time, whether your content in your role or not, to have
specific goals set for yourself and to continually assess them with where
you are right now. Be aware of the progress you have made and reward
yourself, also be aware of any corrective action that may be required.
-
If you’re not looking for alternatives, the
right opportunity may pass you by. Its too easy for all of us at
times to become unfocused on our goals, again be aware of your key needs
and goals, then when the opportunity arises, you’ll be in the best position
to sieze it.
Potential Actions :
-
Continually assess your career goals.
Be aware of your longer-term goals, maybe 10 or 20 years, take a look inside
at where you want to be, what you want to feel and what you must accomplish
to achieve this. Should you assess where you are right now, are you
on the correct path to attain these longer-term goals, if not, what action
is necessary to make your dreams a reality.
-
Think of what you believe would be your absolute
ideal job and career. Carry out some research in this area and assess
just how realistic this career would be for you.
-
Get help from others – talk to your colleagues,
your boss and assess the feedback you receive to assist the making of your
decision. Also talk to your friends and family, they can have a steadying
influence, and always understand you control the direction you will take
– information you receive from others can simply help you to assess where
you are and where you are going. Take responsibility. Take action.
